Communications Officer Job Requirements


  • Communications officers for the Goochland County Sheriff's Office should be able to clearly and concisely communicate with citizens, deputies, other police officers, fire department members, rescue squad members, and county, state, and federal authorities on a one on one basis through a variety of means (radio, telephone, and teletype). Communications officers should have good language skills, good grammar, spelling abilities, and must be able to enunciate the English language clearly.
  • Communications officers should be proficient at reading, following directions and understanding written procedures and technical manuals which relate to the radios, computers, TDD lines and E911 emergency systems.
  • Communications officers are required to file alphabetically and chronologically.
  • Communications officers need proficient typing skills, computer skills, working multiple computer screens, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Communications officers are required to work long hours (12 hour shifts) while under emotional stress.
  • Communications officers must have the ability to prioritize multiple calls in order of severity.
